KNUTSFORD A 3

Atlantic 2

IT was a crucial result that lifted Knutsford to safety in this tough division and it was a spirited and battling performance that saw them through against old rivals Atlantic FC at Manchester Road on Saturday.

They went 1-0 down in the eighth minute, but showed great resolve and bounced back with two great goals by Martin Simcock and captain Joey Morphet. Simcock cut in from the right and cracked a clinical left foot shot past giant Atlantic keeper Paul Coffey in the 18th minute to level.

Morphet stretched the home side's lead 10 minutes later with a superb header following more good work from Simcock.

Atlantic were dangerous on the break and in the 35th minute Paul Ross made it 2-2 with a clever free kick that keeper Lewis Davies could do little about. In the second half, Knutsford stepped up a gear and when Morphet was on the ball he dominated the game, inspiring his teammates.

The improving Allen Watson and Martin Shipp gave great accounts of themselves in midfield.

The unassuming Andy Jackson was his reliable self at the back and Knutsford were in good shape for the final onslaught. In the 78th minute, Simcock was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded to the home side. Joe Da Costa, under immense pressure, slammed home the spot kick to give the Reds a crucial and deserved victory.

Tonight (Wednesday), Knutsford A play their final game of the season at home against Timperley Taverners. Kick off is at 6.30pm.
