IN reply to the person who accused me of being childish about the name of the bridge spanning the Mersey, I would ask that person to read my letter again and understand my genuine concern for the name of the bridge. Since Princess Alexander opened the bridge in 1961 it was always referred to as The New Bridge.

Over the last 40 years it has been referred to by different people calling it a variety of names, eg, Runcorn Bridge, Widnes/Runcorn Bridge, Runcorn/Widnes Bridge and even by a chap that I was having a conversation with in St Austell in Cornwall a couple of years ago as The Widnes Suspension Bridge.

So you see, I'm not bothered about it being named after Widnes just because I live here, I would just like the bridge to have its own identity, and by that I mean call it after the river that it crosses, like most bridges around the world.

I hope Joe White reads this.
