on doorsteps

INDEPENDENT candidate Paul Kennedy says his brand of old-fashioned campaigning is winning friends in Warrington South.

The Appleton-based hopeful has been out with a loud speaker phone in his car, meeting and greeting people.

And he says that by engaging with people on the doorsteps and conducting debate, there is a way to fight voter apathy.

He added: "There has been a really positive response and if people listen to what is being said on the doorsteps, they will get out and vote."

Meanwhile, Community Action Party candidate Mike Hughes says a stronger hand is needed to drive down crime in the borough.

He added: "This will require a change in the attitude of magistrates and judges and an increase in the provision of prison space.

"The politically correct liberal approach to these issues has been tried and failed. It's time that the fear factor was transferred from communities to the criminal."
