TAKE part in celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day on May 8.

Organisations and schools across Newton are invited to join in the special service at St Helens war memorial in Victoria Square.

Those taking part should meet at the Hardshaw Street side of the town hall at 10.25am for the short procession.

Mayor of St Helens, Clr Betty Lowe, will lead a wreath-laying ceremony.

Wreaths for associations and organisations can be collected from the Royal Naval Association Club, on Volunteer Street, St Helens every day except Thursday from 2pm to 5pm.

There will also be a programme of events at libraries across St Helens, from May 6 to 9 to mark the celebrations.

All libraries will have a display of contemporary photographs and news cuttings.

Newton Library will stage a special display entitled Children into War, and will also be holding a special children's quiz.

Haydock East Library is holding a coffee morning on May 6, with war time music.

l A wreath laying service will be held on May 11 at Earlestown war memorial.

The service, organised by Newton and Earlestown Royal British Legion, starts at 11am.
