Northwich people turned out in force over the weekend to join in with a Roman dig next to the Blue Barrel pub in Castle.
A small portion of Roman pavement and some pieces of Roman pottery were discovered, along with many pieces of Regency period ale mugs and fragments of 18th century wine bottles.
These finds have confirmed the record of an older inn on the site of the Blue Barrel.
The dig was a curtain raiser to a main community dig which will take place later in the year.
It will hope to answer many more questions about the Roman settlement of Condate, on Castle Hill.
