A SMALL army of people descended on Middlewich to see the grand unveiling of the town's new Roman amphitheatre.

Just as Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was the £350,000 development, and with workers finishing just 10 minutes before the official opening, organisers had a tight squeeze making sure everything was in place in time.

But town officials were thrilled with the turnout and have heralded the opening as a huge success.

Dave Thompson, events organiser for Middlewich Town Council, said: "It was a really great day. The weather was great - it was just what was needed.

"It was a bit touch and go when the builders were on site 10 minutes before but it turned out well in the end."

The opening ceremony began at 2pm with an address from the mayor of Congleton borough Clr Neville Price, followed by a performance from pupils at St Mary's Primary School and a welcome from Middlewich Town Mayor Clr Jim Basford.

Speaking after the event, Clr Basford said: "The Bull Ring opening went really well with a good turnout to support the event. The children from St Mary's Primary School gave an excellent performance which was enjoyed by everyone."

Dave added: "It looks great and a lot of people that I have spoken to said how wonderful it looks, which is a relief.

"Now I just want to hear from people as to what they would like us to put on there."

The next major event to take place at the amphitheatre will be a sponsored busk, organised by the Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival, on May 14.
