THE future of Northwich's only outdoor swimming pool is in doubt.

The pool, set in a woodland setting in Marbury Country Park, is about to open its doors for the new season.

And it could prove to be its last if visitor numbers do not increase this summer.

The group which runs the pool needs to raise money to replace its pre-Second World War pump and the pipes that keep the water circulating.

Last year, income from membership fees and day ticket sales just covered pool running costs, leaving little over to pay for much needed improvements.

Jeanette Jackson, the group's membership secretary, said: "On a hot summer's day, the Marbury pool is a little oasis.

"It is surrounded by sunny lawned grounds and stands in the woods at Marbury Park.

"The problem is that the pool is a little off the beaten track and surprisingly few people who visit the country park are aware of its existence.

"This year, we will be charging £3 for a day pass in the hope that people come along and eventually decide to join our club.

"We are keen to increase our membership so that we can keep our little piece of paradise open for many summers to come."

Over the past few weeks, pool members have been busy refurbishing buildings and clearing the grounds.

They have planted new trees and bushes to brighten up the play and picnic areas around the pool.

A website has been set up to give people more information about the pool. To download a membership application form, visit www.marburypool.info.

You can also write to Jeanette Jackson, membership secretary, 9a Maori Drive, Frodsham, Cheshire, WA6 7BS to request a form. Adult membership is £20 a season, child membership (three to 16 years) is £10 and under threes can enter free.

The pool is open every day from May 7 to September 1.
