THE future of Halton's most historic site can now be properly planned.

A lottery grant of £49,500 will pay for specialist reports into Halton Castle.

"Halton Castle is a magnificent landmark," said Weaver Vale MP Mike Hall.

"Conservation work is needed to preserve this historic treasure. I am absolutely delighted that the heritage lottery fund has made this grant."

The money will pay for a conservation plan, an access plan and other specialist reports.

The building is believed to have first been built as a wooden Motte and Bailey castle in around 1071.

It has acted as a courthouse and a prison, and was twice stormed by parliamentary forces in the English Civil War.

The castle is today owned by the Duchy of Lancaster and managed by Norton Priory Trust on behalf of Halton Council.

A council spokesperson said: "We're delighted with the grant.

"Halton Castle is a very important site both locally and nationally."
