FAMILY and friends of George Cush will have somewhere to go to remember the 12-year-old after the 1st Davenham Scout group opened a memorial garden in his honour.

Hilary Belshaw found her son unconscious in the bedroom of his London Road home on March 19.

Despite the efforts of staff at Leighton Hospital, The County High School pupil George never regained consciousness.

Now George's Scouting friends have launched a garden in memory of their popular friend.

Leader David Bibby said: "The boys were set the task of creating a garden as part of their environmental award and the parish council recommended land behind the Davenham church hall, on Church Street, as it had become a real village eyesore.

"We started renovation work 18 months ago and George was very much a part of that.

"I remember having a chat with him one day about how much he enjoyed mucking in.

"His father Andy was telling me George had been gardening with him in the afternoon before his death, so it seemed like an obvious place to have the memorial."

George's friends planted a Ceanothus bush at the ceremony in front of a crowd of more than 70 people including George's parents and county Scout commissioner Eddie Johnson.

Mr Bibby added: "We chose the blue flowering bush as it seemed most appropriate for George and his parents were very touched by the whole event.

"We also put a plaque up last week signalling that the area is in memory of George and there's a bench nearby so people can visit when they want to be close to him."

Assistant Cub leader George Stiff said: "It was a lovely evening for everyone.

"The weather was dry and fine.

"It was a great day, nice and dry, and George's parents came to watch the bush being planted. It was very emotional time but it meant so much to everyone who attended."
