A CAVALCADE of Rolls Royces will drive through Knutsford this morning to end a year of celebrations.

About 50 classic cars were due to make a final pilgrimage to the former home of Sir Henry Royce, who lived in Legh Road.

Yesterday (Tuesday) 69-year-old Peter Bellis said he hoped for a smoother journey than last year when there were roadworks at every turn. "I hope, being as it is not April Fool's Day this year, that they will not be digging up the roads," he said.

"This has been our centenary year and this is the grand finale."

Last year 100 enthusiasts retraced the route Royce took on his first journey in one of his famous cars.

They travelled from Manchester to Knutsford in 50 Rolls Royces at the start of their year of celebrations. A crowd gathered outside Royce's former home of Brae Cottage in Legh Road to see them arrive.

Mr Bellis, who was due to navigate the driver of a Silver Ghost today, said the couple who now live at the house would be collected and taken to the Swettenham Arms.

"They have been so good to us that we wanted to pay them back in some way," he said. Last night Mr Bellis planned to drive from St Helens to Knutsford to check the route and put up direction signs.

The Rolls Royces were due to meet at Fryer's Garden Centre in Manchester Road between 9-10am where they will stop for a chat.

They will then drive through the town centre to Legh Road where they are expected to arrive by 11am.

"Anyone is welcome to come out and watch us," he said.
