EXHILARATED cheerleaders rousing fans to support Widnes Vikings now have an exciting new image, thanks to a Widnes mum.

Creative seamstress Ann Hill has designed cotton tops and block pleat skirts - in the team's black and white colours.

"Everyone's been telling me they saw the outfits on the telly," said Ann, whose husband, John, has supported the team for 35 years, with their three sons.

Her sister-in-law, Doreen, the club's lottery manager, asked her if she could help when she heard the girls needed new costumes.

"I've really enjoyed it," said Ann.

It was a labour of love as she had to make 16 tops and 16 skirts!

The Vikinettes made their debut in their new costumes at the Sky televised Leeds game.

Cheerleading coach, Maxine Mealey, said: "People kept coming up to me saying how great they looked. We've wanted new kits for ages but couldn't afford them.

"Ann's done a fantastic job. She had to amend old patterns because girls now wear skirts on their hips not their waist. They look superb!"

The Vikinettes presented Ann with a bouquet and plant to say thank you.
