DEATH has been an occupational hazard in Halton for generations.

The chemical industry has claimed the lives of workers for decades - and asbestos has been the worst offender.

To remember the dead, an official party planted a tree at Runcorn Town Hall on April 28, Workers' Memorial Day.

It was accompanied by a plaque from Cheshire Asbestos Victims Support Group CAVSG.

Mayor Cllr Pat Tyrrell laid the plaque, joined by trade unionists and members of CAVSG.

He said: "We are pleased to hold this ceremony because it is important that we take time to remember those people who have died in the workplace.

"We should also remember to support their families, those suffering with illness, and the work of CAVSG which provides valuable services to Halton residents."

Cheshire Asbestos Victims' Support Group is based in Runcorn and is run by volunteers, most of whom are victims themselves.

Their work includes giving help and advice to those suffering with an asbestos related illness and also the families of those who have died.
