YOUNGSTERS have been given the chance to show off their sporting prowess in a football tournament between 10 primary schools in the Penketh and Sankey district.

The competition, organised by Eagle junior football club at Penketh Community Primary School, was aimed at boys and girls in years four and five who do not usually get the chance to play football.

Dave Smith, a coach at Eagle JFC, said: “We got into partnership with Penketh Community Primary School four years ago to run a school football festival.

“There are a lot of kids who enjoy football but don’t get to play for clubs.”

Youngsters from special school Green Lane in Padgate also played a match between themselves in the midday break of the event on May 22 and were presented trophies by premiership referee Chris Foy.

The winners of the year four tournament were Dallam Community Primary School with Barrow Hall Community Primary School in Great Sankey coming second and St Vincent’s Catholic Primary in Penketh scooping the title for fair play.

Evelyn Street Primary School in Sankey Bridges claimed the winner’s trophy for the year five competition while Dallam Community Primary School came second and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Penketh achieved the title for fair play.

Mr Smith added: “The day went very well and everyone really enjoyed it. We hope to do it again for our fifth anniversary.”
