THE search for a new director of children’s services is under way.

Twenty hopefuls of ‘high calibre’ were invited to Statham Lodge Hotel on Tuesday to answer questions from around 16 of Warrington Borough Council’s key stakeholders.

Representatives included staff from the town’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), police, the NSPCC and council officials from the department.

The four-and-a-half hours of questioning involved candidates talking to the stakeholders about how they would deal with a number of scenarios.

A shortlist of applicants was made for the next interview stage.

Peter Edwards, a member of the panel, said: “The applicants had extensive records. I was very impressed but Warrington is a good council and the position pays a good wage. Only the best is acceptable, anything less is not.”

It is believed that the successful candidate, who will replace Norma Cadwallader at the end of August, will be agreed by the end of the week.
