What a win against Hull KR, I am sure the whole occasion and the way we won the game will have the whole of Warrington smiling and talking rugby league all week!
During the week at training Tony Smith spoke about how we need to keep the ball away from Hull KR and if we made handling errors they would feed off the back of that and look to score points.
When the game started i think we did exactly what he told us not to do, we looked to score on every shift play instead of grinding them down and looking to complete the set. I think it took us 15-20 minutes for us to settle down with the ball and once we did I personally feel we took control of the game.
Defensively in the whole of the first half we were not very dominant and that is something Tony spoke to us about in the changing rooms at half time, and i think in the second half we were a lot more controlling around the play the ball area.
I think Adrian Morley and Gareth Carvell deserve a mention because over the last 4-5 weeks they have totally dominated the field! The contribution that those two put into the team is massive, they lay the foundations for Briers and Monas and once the team starts to go forward its very difficult to stop us.
With Moz and Gaz playing so well it is making Myself and Rah work harder at training and we are working on extra fitness and strength and skills because all players want to get into the starting line up or play as much game time as possible, but its not just the props that are doing the extra work, everyone is doing the same because of the competition for places and that is health for the team and it's something we haven't had at Warrington for a while.
Tony Smith keeps every player on their toes when it comes to getting picked for the team, he watches every little thing you do, on the field and off the field. If a player as a top game one weekend but he feels they have not made enough sacrifices or contributions to training the following week then he as explained that he has no problem in dropping that player if he feels it will benefit the team, and that keeps everybody on their toes which is good and something that we need.
Something that i have noticed this week from Tony Smith is how he can keep players calm but also get them ready and up for a big game. This week against Hull KR was a massive week for us because we all know how desperate we are to win a trophy, and Tony kept every player really calm and told us not to get caught up in the emotion of the occasion but be ready to do the best job you can do.
Before the game i could sense nervous energy but also confidence and a will to work for each other and once you can sense that you almost know your going to have a good day at the office.
After all the excitement had died down and we began to get our feet on the ground we realized we had won nothing in this competition yet and we still had another game to think about in the semi's. Before we even think anything about the Challenge cup we have Super League to set our minds on and we are still fighting for a place in the top 8.
We are desperate to get some wins under our belts and to climb the table but we'll take each game at a time and hope a couple of results go our way so we can get to where we want to be. Castleford this week will be a massive game for us because the Tigers have improved massively this season and they have got some quality young players in the team that bring a lot of enthusiasm, pace and desire to win. Lets hope we can take more enthusiasm to the Jungle and come a way with the 2 points.
Speak soon, Woody.
