A SILVER anniversary has marked the placing of the Mad Hatter’s tea party statue in the fish market.

The monument represents Daresbury-born Lewis Carroll’s world-renowned Alice in Wonderland books, which was first published in the 1860s.

Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana unveiled the eight-tonne granite monument in the town in 1984.

Edwin Russell, the sculptor, was picked from 200 hopeful artists to complete the figure which cost £25,000.

Ian Cox, marketing manager of the Golden Square shopping centre, said: “The statue has become a centre piece of the market square and a meeting point for many shoppers. Since its inception in 1984, it has witnessed many developments to its environment and now takes pride of place in the new centre’s busy dining square.”
