A CALLANDS charity worker is asking for support to help her make a mission to India following a life-changing operation.
Rachel Akers, aged 29, of Holyhead Close, has worked for two small charities, Love India Charitable Trust and Better State Life Centre, for the last three years.
The trained nursery nurse spends six months each year providing after school education, stories, songs, games and outings for children in India before returning to Warrington to raise funds for her next trip.
She does this by working at the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust near Lymm, running activities for terminally ill, disabled and disadvantaged children.
But when Rachel underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor two years ago the born again Christian realised that she wanted to spend even more time helping others abroad.
She said: “I used to work as a supervisor of pre-school children.
“After surgery I went back to work and I just felt that it wasn’t right anymore. I felt God wanted me to go to India.
“I just feel that the work that I do there now is very important and there is so much more that I could achieve if I was there all year round.
“I feel very strongly that this is something I have been called to do by God.”
Rachel will be setting off to India in November, but she will need sponsorship to help pay for her 12-month stay.
Her mum Janette Akers hopes it is a cause people will be willing to support.
The 48-year-old said: “It amazes me that somebody can just be so selfless because she doesn’t even have a day to herself and that is the truth.”
