DOCTORS performed 688 abortions in Warrington last year, including 59 on girls aged under 18.

The figures, released by the Department of Health, show that more women aged between 20 and 24 had abortions than any other age group, with 195 procedures in that age group.

That figure correlates to 35 women in every 1,000 in the town.

In 2007 there were 631 abortions in Warrington, of which 64 were on girls aged under 18.

Nationally the total number of abortions fell marginally, by 1.6 per cent.

From 2006 to 2008 there were 37 abortions performed on girls aged under 16.

Warrington had the fourth lowest abortion rate in the north west.

Manchester's was the highest, with 3,006 abortions performed in 2008.
