THE chairman of Hollins Park Social Club has described the council’s decision to grant it permission to hold auctions and car boot sales as ‘a lifeline’.
Jeff Sutton says the club on Townfield Lane, in Winwick, was in serious threat of going under due to the loss of revenue after Warrington Borough Council said the events were not allowed.
But following talks between the club and the council a formal planning application was submitted which has now been approved with conditions.
Mr Sutton said: “It is just unbelievable. It is like we were drowning and somebody has thrown us a lifebelt – it’s a lifeline for the club.
“The profit we made last year was £600 and that was running car boots and auctions all year so you can imagine how hard it has been.
“We had lots of letters of support which has just been tremendous and those people have all been informed about the decision.”
The auctions will now be held every Wednesday from 6.30pm to 9pm, with viewing starting at 5.30pm.
The car boot sales are expected to begin in September once the club has installed new screening measures at its car park.
Mr Sutton added: “It has been granted as long as the conditions are met and they will be met.”
