THE Hawthorn Centre is preparing to reopen its doors to the community after being closed for three years, and has rebranded itself as Hawthorn Community Centre.

Work has recently been completed on the centre as voluntary groups, councillors and council officers brought it back to its former glory, and the reopening is expected to take place in July.

Five weeks ago a consortium of charity groups led by The Community Church Warrington and including Mencap Warrington bought the lease to the centre.

Once it is reopened it will provide a variety of services.

Projects already set to be based there include a Mencap outreach centre, nursery and playgroup, youth club and a group for the elderly.

The Blackbrook centre will also be available to hire for private events. Cheshire Police are also considering having a base there.

“As the inspector for the neighbourhood police team myself and my colleagues are very pleased to see this great community facility reopened,” said Insp Richard Spedding.

“It is of immense credit to the church organisation that they have had the courage and commitment to see this project through for the benefit of the whole community.

“The Padgate team of officers look forward to using the centre and its facilities and meeting other members of the community who will be using the centre.”

Clr Bob Barr, executive board member for planning, regeneration and housing, said the council would continue to work with community groups and the new owners of the centre to ensure it meets local needs.

Warrington Borough Council does not own the building but has been protecting, insuring and maintaining it since February 2007.

Speaking on behalf of the new owners, Stuart Hodgkinson said: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide the Hawthorn Centre as a resource for the community.

“The reopening of this valuable facility has been brought about by the goodwill of a large number of people who each have a vision and determination to help improve the lives of Warrington residents and communities.”

Clr Mike Hannon (LAB – Orford) said: “I am pleased that the building is reopening for the benefit of the community. “It is an excellent centre and I would wish every one involved continued success.”
