PARISH councillors say pensioners could be left stranded for two months while roadworks are carried out.

Much needed resurfacing work on Barsbank Lane and Star Lane in Statham will force a change in the Warrington Borough Transport bus route.

And bus bosses now say that they will not be able to get to some areas of Statham.

Clr Pam Marks told Tuesday’s meeting of Lymm Parish Council that the bus must be kept running during the work.

She added: “We are not going to get a bus service in Statham during the closures.

“They cannot expect elderly ladies to go up that hill (to where the nearest bus stop now is).

“I have trouble walking there so I am sure it is not a good idea for old people.

“We should write and request that they look at this again.”

Council leader Ian Marks said while there was no easy solution, the bus company should take another look.

“It is difficult, we accept that,” he said.

“But there are people in Statham who will be in trouble for eight weeks.

“We do have a bit of time before the work starts to suggest something.”

Parish councillors also objected to the proposed movement of a bus shelter from Barsbank Lane during the work.

The eight-week programme starts later this month and will see the roads completely resurfaced.

The roads are likely to be closed between 9am and 5.30pm with diversions in place and signposted.
