A MAN had to be cut free from the wreckage of this car following a crash at the junction of the M6 and the M62 early this morning.

The fact he was wearing a seatbelt probably saved his life, said Birchwood Fire Station watch manager Javon Heaney.

The car had gone through the crash barrier on the M62 sliproad and hit a lamppost at around 2.40am.

It was the driver's side of the car that hit the lamppost, and were it not for his seatbelt he would probably have been thrown from the car.

The driver suffered serious injuries to the right side of his body, and an ambulance took him to hospital once fire crews had cut him free.

They had to cut the roof of the car off to pull the man, thought to be from Widnes, from the wreckage.

"He was doing a decent speed when he hit the barrier and the impact hit the car on its drivers' side," said watch manager Heaney.

"If he hadn't been wearing a seatbelt he would have been thrown from the vehicle; his head would have gone through the windshield."
