A SUPPORT group for breastfeeding mums has been celebrating nature in an effort to convince more new mums that breast is best.

The Bosom Buddies group met last week, Breastfeeding Awareness Week, to promote breastfeeding over bottle feeding.

The benefits for both baby and mum are well documented, with babies protected from infection and diseases and mums less at risk of getting certain diseases later in life.

Women who breastfeed also return to their pre-pregnancy figure faster.

“Breastfeeding is the best take-away you’ll ever find – it’s nutritious, costs nothing and you can take it anywhere,” said Avril Smith, infant feeding coordinator at NHS Warrington’s Community Services Unit.

“How you feed your baby is a very personal choice, and we want to make sure mums are aware of all their options, getting the right support and knowing all the facts can make a big difference.”

Avril and colleague Ann Hatton work with Bosom Buddies to support new mums through the trials of breastfeeding.

The group met at Tia’s Tapas and Salsa Restaurant on Bridge Street, which is currently applying for a Sure Start Parent Friendly award to demonstrate that breastfeeding is welcome on site.
