A LATCHFORD high school drummed up high profile support for a new award that it has been developing.

Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School welcomed the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu who came to see the work being done by the school on the award scheme.

During his visit to the specialist music school, on Grammar School Road, Dr Sentamu even tried his hand at playing the African djembe drums.

Year seven pupil Abbey Anders said: “I think he was really cool on the drums.”

Sir Thomas Boteler has been pioneering the Archbishop of York Award, a three-stage project like the Duke of Edinburgh Award, but based on Christian values of faith, hope and charity.

The Archbishop was impressed with the work done by Warrington’s only Church of England school, which has become the most oversubscribed school in the town.

Head teacher John Staples said: “The Archbishop’s visit was a very proud occasion for us and it proved to be an inspirational experience for our whole school community.

“I am delighted that our pupils had the opportunity to meet such a renowned leader, who is prepared to stand up for justice and truth.

“His assembly was amazing and incorporated a masterclass that our drummers will never forget!”

His visit went down well with pupils as he captivated them with his musical skills, showcased with some of the school’s talented pupils.

“We would love to see him again at Boteler,” added year seven pupil Meg Murray.
