A FORMER Warrington Wolves player suffered a heart attack and died while driving on the M6, an inquest has heard.

David Myers, who also played for Widnes, Wigan and Great Britain, has traces of amphetamine, anabolic steroids and blood when he died.

He was killed in October after his the van he was driving ploughed into a railway bridge.

At the inquest into his death today, Cheshire Coroner Nicholas Rheinberg was told Mr Myers, aged 37 and living in Warrington, was a "keep fit fanatic" but was working "terrifically long hours", seven days a week.

He was working as a van driver and a nightclub bouncer and has got his rugby league training certificate shortly before he died.

Questioned about his use of amphetamines girlfiriend Sarah Southern said she wasn't aware of him using substances.

She added: "He may have taken things to keep him awake at work."

Miss Southern told the court that on the night before he died, her partner had complained of tiredness and chest pains and had planned to see a doctor.

Witnesses to his crash, at around 8.50pm on October 20, described how Mr Myers' van overtook two vehicles on the northbound carriageway of the motorway and then swerved as it returned to the middle lane.

The van then ploughed at high speed through a barrier protecting a railway bridge and hit the bridge itself.
