CHESHIRE Dogs’ Home is offering tips on how to keep costs of looking after pooches low during the credit crunch.

The RSPCA announced last week a 57 per cent increase in the number of abandoned dogs and Cheshire Dogs’ Home in Grappenhall has seen a slump in the number of pedigree and larger breeds adopted as they are perceived to cost more.

Anna Widdowson, manager of the home, said: “There is an obvious financial commitment that comes with owning a dog but many of the money-saving tactics that we use for ourselves during the recession can easily be applied to dogs too.

“For example, buying dog food in bulk and using more inexpensive brands along with searching for the best deals on food, medical care, toys and training online.

“However by far the main considerations in adopting a dog are time and affection.”

The charity is offering discount neutering to all dogs adopted from the home and £5 for microchipping.
