WHITECROSS A CHILDREN’S fitness club has picked up a top class Whitecross athlete as its ambassador.

Fit Kidz, which offers free sports sessions to children in the Whitecross and Dallam area, has announced that Steve Deakin as its new patron.

Steve was brought up in Whitecross and will help to raise the profile of the group through a series of fundraising events.

He recently received an MBE from the Queen, but now he will help the charity that works with children aged from five to 17.

Fit Kidz provides sports and informal educational activities for young people in sports like football, rugby, netball and street dance.

During school holidays its works expands to include residential trips and workshops tackling issues as alcohol abuse, drugs, anti-social behaviour and health and fitness.

Steve is the captain of the England transplant swimming team and has won two bronze medals in Thailand in 2007 among many other accolades.
