A WIDOW who has campaigned for stronger, safer communities after her husband was murdered in Fearnhead two years ago has won the Cheshire Woman of the Year award 2009.

Helen Newlove received the accolade for her outstanding personal courage and contribution to her community.

Helen set up the Newlove Warrington campaign with her three daughters Zoe, Danielle and Amy as a legacy to her husband Gary who died at the hands of yobs in August 2007.

The Newloves aim to improve the sense of community and opportunity across the region, stop anti-social behaviour, inspire people and help motivate them to enrich their lives.

Helen was among 60 nominated women from across Cheshire and the Wirral to attend a prestigious ceremony at Eaton Hall last Wednesday to have shown personal courage, outstanding professional success, or given service to their community.

As the overall winner, Helen was presented with a silver salver.

She said: “It came out of the blue and I was speechless when I got the call. I feel very honoured to be chosen as Cheshire Woman of the Year.

“There are so many people who do a fantastic job. I feel really humbled and proud and I know Garry would be and the girls were as well.

“There was a lady I knew at the event who said she lights a candle for me and says a prayer and that is very humbling – you can’t believe people take it to their hearts.

Helen added: “It means the message of Newlove Warrington is getting out there. I feel very warm inside that people are still taking me to their heart and wanting to support me.

”It means more as well because it is by the people around where I live. I am still in shock but I am absolutely delighted and am looking to going forward with Newlove Warrington.”

The awards are an annual event to reward worthy women with the recognition they deserve.

The event also raised money for the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal, funding projects that will help end cruelty to children throughout the UK.

Rachel Carter, NSPCC community fundraising manager, added: “This event is in its 24th year and it is a fantastic way to celebrate the wonderful attributes and skills of women across Cheshire and the Wirral.”
