THE World Health Organisation has today raised its swine flu alert level to level five, just one short of a full pandemic.
It is a strong indicator that a pandemic is imminent, the WHO said.
The news came as swine flu was confirmed in more countries, and five cases were announced in the UK, including an 12-year-old girl.
NHS Warrington bosses have urged people not to panic and said there are plans in place should the alert level be raised again to level six.
There have been no cases in areas surrounding Warrington.
One suspected case in Sale was later confirmed to be negative.
Travel to affected countries, particularly Mexico, is not recommended unless absolutely essential.
If you are feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms and have recently been to an affected area, you should stay indoors and call your GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for advice.
Over the weekend and bank holiday, you can call Garven Place out of hours clinic on 644217.
Have you been affected by swine flu? Perhaps you have been to one of the countries affected, or have a holiday booked there.
