Well again I have the opportunity to write a blog with a smile on my face.
A good win against Huddersfield Giants is just what we wanted and to do it in front of a home crowd just made it that extra bit special, I hope that win turned a few frowns into smiles.
We haven't had much to smile about so far this season and its been very frustrating for us the players and also for you the fans but hopefully we have turned a corner after 2 convincing wins.
Against Huddersfield I think you could see a more confident team that was playing with more fluency and patience. Over the last few games we have made it our objective to stick to the game plan and not to go away from that even when we are under pressure.
At times this season we have been guilty of cracking under pressure and that as meant us going away from the game plan which normally means you have 13 different players on the pitch trying to do there own thing.
In the last 2 games its plain to see that everybody is playing to the same game plan, communication is better and the confidence levels are higher which generally means more fluency and exciting rugby. It's very hard to pin point why it as took till this part of the season for the penny to drop because we have been preparing and training the same all year, personally i think it as come down to confidence and team spirit.
Over the last month we have really pushed to get a tight knit group of players together and i think that as helped us on the pitch. At the moment we are liking being in the company of each other and we are enjoying what we are doing and thats a really important part of being in a team.
Before each game a pact is made to make sure the guy stood next to you is willing to take a hit or work for you in defense and thats what Rugby League is all about. You can have all the talent and skill in the world but without the core elements of team spirit it means nothing.
I know how important team spirit can help a team, in 2003 Warrington got to the play-offs for the first time in Super league and for me that year the main thing that got us through the season was the togetherness of the squad.
A lot of people i spoke to outside of Warrington thought that Warrington over achieved that year because of the squad we had on paper. I think we did pretty good that year because of the team spirit we had.
Now in 2009 if people look at the squad on paper they will say we should be getting to finals, well hopefully we can keep building on the team spirit and our skills and I am pretty sure we won't be to far off.
I don't want to sound like I am giving false hope because we have won 2 games back to back but for me as a player once you get some confidence you have to ride the wave of it.
This week will be a real test of character because we are playing against a Hull KR team that are willing to work hard for each other but they also have some skillful players in Dobson and Paul Cooke. They also have the big forwards that don't mind passing and offloading at the line so that means we are going to have to be switched on defensively.
I am sure the Warrington fans will be there to cheer us on and I really hope we can send you home with a smile on your faces.
I hope you have a good weekend and speak soon, Woody.
