A POLICE boss has spoken out about the potential dangers of drinks promotions in the town centre.

Several bars around Bridge Street sport signs aiming to allure revellers with cheap drink offers professing to help beat the credit crunch ranging from 99p to an offer by McCauley’s for customers to pay £20 for all they can drink between 2pm and 10pm this Bank Holiday Sunday.

Inspector Richard Reeves, from Warrington Town Centre NPU, said police have been battling to address crime and disorder issues related to alcohol across Cheshire.

He said: “We are continually being called to respond to incidents of aggressive anti-social behaviour linked to alcohol. We work closely with members of the licensing trade about the problems that can occur when price and promotion are used as a promotional tool to attract people into individual premises.

“This is why we are concerned about McCauley's decision in Warrington town centre to use promotional activity encouraging drinking to excess.

“We do not have any local evidence to suggest the premises will be in breach of their licence, however, we know from national research that alcohol promotional activity can increase the risk of crime and disorder problems occurring therefore increasing the risk to customers of alcohol related violence. “ Insp Reeves said officers had discussed their concerns with the licensee who has said the bar will be employing more bouncers for the day and will be removing their high strength spirits and lagers.
