WESTY DOG owners are being warned to scoop after their dogs poop by police and councillors in Westy.

The message comes as police look to tackle the problem of dog fouling on the streets and green spaces around Westy, but it is not the first time that offenders have been warned.

Clr Steve Wright (LAB – Latchford East), said: “For many years we have been asking and reminding dog owners of their responsibilities but it’s got worse.

“Clr Hans Mundry and I do ward walkabouts and it’s obvious this has become a bigger problem and people have been reporting it.

“We have been telling people for years about this problem so we need to work together with the police to try to enforce it better.”

Now police community support officers and council enforcement officers are cracking down on the culprits who are not cleaning up after their pets.

And they are targeting problem times – in the early mornings and evenings when most people are likely to take their dogs out for a walk.

The issue has not gone unnoticed by residents with the subject of dog fouling a hot topic in residents meetings in recent months.

Anyone caught not cleaning up after their dog can be given a £50 on-the-spot fine, which could increase to £1,000 if the case goes to court.

“We all love to take our dogs for a walk but all responsible dog owners agree this is unacceptable,” added Clr Wright.

To report any incidents of dog fouling residents can call 443322 and ask for the dog warden.
