I'VE just read a story for tomorrow's paper that has really made me cross.

From a committee of six councillors - three of them decided not to vote on an important issue for our town.

Councillors Jill Bolton, Les Hoyle and Bill Brinksman, sitting on the Borough Council’s traffic committee, refused to vote on whether traffic should be banned from Lower Bridge Street during weekend evenings.

So that meant the plan to ban traffic on Bridge Street was approved two to one in favour of the closure. Two people out of six. That's ridiculous.

How dare these councillors who put themselves forward to represent us in this town abstain from voting?

They must have an opinion?

Surely going into politics means you have strong views on things that happen in our town and you should be only too ready to voice them?

That's what I have always believed.

Are they really too undecided to tell the public of Warrington what they believe is right or do they think we might be offended?

Whether I agree with a politician or not, I am always open to listening to other people's views.

I'll make up my own mind.

But my hard-earned taxes are going towards these councillors' expenses and for what?

For them to sit in the committee meeting having tea and biscuits? How very cosy.

Clr Bolton even had the cheek to comment in the meeting that she had "not heard any convincing arguments" so why didn't she vote to leave things as they are?

Surely if she's not convinced the changes are a good idea, then she votes against them.

What does it take to get elected as a councillor these days?

I'd love to see Clrs Bolton, Hoyle and Brinksman on the campaign trail.

"Hello, I'm standing for election, you can rely on me to have no opinions whatsover and to sit firmly on the fence, but at least I won't offend you."

So for anyone who feels they are getting short-changed by these three - I suggest you give them a ring and ask them why they didn't vote.

According to the borough council's website, Labour councillor Jill Bolton, represents Birchwood and her phone number is 838167; Conservative Clr Les Hoyle, who represents Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft, and his number is 810130 and Clr Bill Brinksman, also Labour, represents Rixton and Woolston and can be called on 821922.

I would like to challenge the three of them to spend a night in Bridge Street, one Friday or Saturday, and see for themselves why the issue is so important.

While they are there perhaps they could listen to one or two of the taxi drivers who are concerned about their livelihood and also to some of the police officers trying to keep order.

Perhaps then they might actually earn their council taxpayer-funded tea and biscuits!
