Independent retailers and the local community came together to serve hot meals to vulnerable individuals.

The event, held at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Warrington, was a demonstration of the centuries-old Sikh tradition of Langar, which symbolises equality, humility, and service.

The initiative was led by independent retailers from Nisa, including Mike Sohal from Dallam Stores, Kuldeep Dhillon BEM, and Balbir Kaur BEM of Locking Stumps.

They prepared meals in the Gurdwara’s kitchen, assisted by other Nisa representatives, including the head of retail, Taranjit Singh Dhillon, and the MP for Warrington North, Charlotte Nichols, and her team.

Mike Sohal said: "In the Sikh faith, we hold the belief that food is a fundamental need for all of humanity—a sacred gift that connects us as equals, regardless of caste, creed, or background.

"Sharing a meal through Langar is not just about nourishment; it’s an act of love and humility that reflects the oneness of humanity."

Langar, rooted in Sikhism, is open to everyone, regardless of religion, caste, or status, and serves as a tool for unity and combating social challenges such as hate and division.

The event saw volunteers from different backgrounds come together to help prepare and serve meals, addressing issues such as food insecurity and social isolation.

She said: "Seeing our retailers come together with local volunteers to prepare and serve Langar is truly inspiring.

"It’s a testament to the power of seva, or selfless service, to nourish not only bodies but also souls."

The event was more than just a meal; it was a chance for people to connect, share stories, and find comfort in each other’s company.

Kuldeep Dhillon summed up the event, saying: "Langar teaches us timeless values that resonate strongly today.

"In a world often divided, initiatives like this remind us of the importance of compassion and community."

The success of the day has left many volunteers and participants eager for future events.
