A PRISONER made 54 calls to a helpline for elderly people and masturbated down the phone.
And when one Age UK colleague asked Carl Fahy for his postcode so she could offer him advice, he told her it was ‘b u m h o l e’.
The 35-year-old, who has a previous conviction for indecent exposure, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court via video link on Thursday after pleading guilty to two counts of sending offensive communications and harassment without violence.
Prosecuting, Oliver Saddington said the offences took place between February 15 and February 21 of this year when Fahy was an inmate at Risley Prison and was using the telephone system there.
Between this six-day period, Fahy contacted the Age UK advice line, who offers free support for elderly or vulnerable people, on 54 separate occasions.
Mr Saddington said: “He would only speak to female members of staff and he would repeat their names throughout the call.
“The crown’s case is that he made these calls for sexual gratification.”
Liverpool Crown Court heard how Fahy, who has been remanded in custody since committing the offences, made the first call on February 15 where he told the woman who answered that he was in prison and that he was distressed and upset.
The advisor told Fahy that he should speak to prison staff and suggested he contacted Samaritans.
Mr Saddington said how at first Fahy was polite, but the woman noticed that his ‘breathing had changed’ and she realised he was masturbating so she hung up.
The same day, Fahy called the Age UK helpline again where he spoke to another woman.
He told her that he had spoken to Samaritans but said they were no help.
The woman asked Fahy for his postcode so that she could offer him advice on support available to him. Responding to this this, he spelt out ‘bum hole’.
She then noticed that the defendant was providing incomplete sentences and was heavy breathing. She realised he was masturbating so ended the call.
Fahy phoned the same woman again five days later.
He has 56 convictions for 82 offences, including harassment and indecent exposure.
Defending, Phil Clemo said how Fahy was previously struggling with his mental health. But he said it now seems like he has ‘greatly improved’ and that he has been making ‘some progress’ while he has been remanded in prison.
Concluding, Judge David Potter said how the helpline is there to assist elderly and vulnerable people.
He said: “It could well do without people like you ringing them maliciously.”
Fahy interrupted: “To be honest Judge, I did not know, and I will not do it again.”
Judge Potter continued: “The people you called were two female members of staff, both who were disgusted that their help towards you was repaid by you masturbating down the phoneline and gaining sexual gratification from it
“On each occasion you were telling them you were calling from prison.
“You were arrested immediately upon release and remanded again.
“You deliberately targeted these people and this helpline for sexual gratification.
“You must understand if you engage in any sort of this behaviour again, the sentence will continue to get longer and longer.”
Fahy was handed 14 months in prison. However this means he will be released with immediate effect as he has been remanded in custody since earlier this year.
