A FAMILY have organised a touching festive tribute to a beloved grandmother who was known for her stunning Christmas lights displays.

Winifred Rankin, affectionately known as Winnie, lived in Warrington her whole life and every year she marked the festive season with an incredible display of Christmas lights.

The 84-year-old was the matriarch of a huge family, with five children, 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

One of her grandchildren, Nicole, said she can’t remember exactly when Winnie started putting up the lights outside her house but that it became a tradition.

“I think it came from us being kids,” she said.

“Every single year she would put up the Christmas lights and make us all Christmas dinner.

“She was known for her Christmas lights.”

Winnie, who lived on Statham Avenue in Orford, would sit in her armchair every day and watch as children walked past the house and admired the decorations.

Sadly, Winnie died on November 8 and so her family have planned a special festive tribute to her.

The family gathered yesterday, Wednesday, to decorate her house in Orford for Christmas one last time.

“It’s just to make her happy one last time, I know my nan would love this,” said Nicole.

The stunning decorations include blow up features in the garden, and lights along the path and across the front of the house.

“Nan was known for how funny she was and her one liners, she was a very witty person,” said Nicole.

“For one last time we can make my nan proud of us.”

Winnie’s funeral will be held on Friday at St Stephens Church on Sandy Lane at 12.30pm.
