WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols ditched her X account this month for a new alternative in the hopes of seeing ‘fewer pornbots and racists.’
The Labour MP can now be found on BlueSky – a new social media platform set up by the former founder of Twitter which is described as ‘social media as it should be’.
The platform, which claims to have an increased focus on moderation, experienced a surge in popularity in recent weeks, as more people moved away from Elon Musk’s X in the wake of the US election.
Ms Nichols announced her departure from X, formerly known as Twitter, two weeks ago in a BlueSky post to her 8,000 followers
She said: “Been here on and off, but as of today I no longer have an account in The Other Place, so I am all in now I guess.”
She has been on the platform since January, with her first post slamming X, stating: “Trying BlueSky out in the hopes of fewer pornbots and racists than Twitter. We shall see.”
Warrington South MP Sarah Hall has also joined the site, but she is yet to go as far as to delete her X account.
BlueSky reached 20million users last week, and it was gaining as many as a million members a day at one point, but it is still yet to attract many big names to the site.
Keir Starmer has ruled out signing up for now, stating that ‘reaching as many people as possible’ is the ‘sole test’ for whether to join a social media channel.
Speaking at the G20 summit in Brazil this month, he said: “No plans at the moment. We are obviously still using Twitter.
He added: “What is important for a Government is that we are able to reach as many people and communicate with as many people as possible, and that is the sole test for any of this as far as I am concerned.”
