SHOPPERS in Warrington are being warned by police to be extra vigilant over the Christmas and New Year period.
Cheshire Police is urging people not to do anything that may render themselves vulnerable to thieves and fraudsters.
It comes after officers had a busy weekend in the town centre with the Warrington Winter Wonderland markets and events.
As well as enjoying the festivities and engaging with the community and local businesses, officers conducted stop searches, resulting in the seizure of suspected stolen property and cannabis.
A community resolution was also issued, along with a number of alcohol seizures.
The force’s Warrington Police team said: “As we enter the very hectic period of Christmas shopping, it is fantastic to see the town centre so busy.
“However, this period is also a busy time for our not-so-festive friends. If you are out in the town, please take extra care when at cash machines and banks.
“Wherever possible, use machines inside the bank and always check nobody is looking over your shoulder when inputting your pin.
“Be careful of people distracting you when getting cash from machines, such as asking directions or saying a machine is not working, make sure you keep hold of your cards, and do not use a machine if they are still around.
“Ensure you keep purses wallets and bags secure at all times, especially when you spot something in store.
“It is often so tempting that bags are left unattended on trolleys, and sadly criminals are aware of this and will follow people around shops waiting for this to happen
“Keep wallets and purses secure, and never leave them loose
“Around 99 per cent of people are honest and helpful. Let's just deter that one per cent from enjoying their Christmas.
“If you do see anyone acting suspiciously, please call it in on 101 or speak to security staff or shop staff in the town centre.”
