A WARRINGTON junior football club has collected nearly £600 in donations for the town’s food bank.

Cromwell Athletic JFC, which plays at Mary Ann Meadows in Westbrook, held its first ever food drive this month – and it was a huge success.

Teams across the club got together to pull in more than 206 kilograms of food for Warrington Foodbank.

Cromwell chairman Steve Davies said: “As a club that considers itself first and foremost an inclusive community club, we are always keen to be involved with all aspects of the community.

“We knew we could rely on the support and generosity of our coaches, families and players to make this event a success.

“When the idea was first discussed, the support and enthusiasm from all within the club was amazing.

“Especially with winter approaching and knowing how tough it is for a lot of people, we all just really wanted to help in some way.”

The club has more than 30 teams and in excess of 400 registered players, ranging from under 5s through to adult sides.

Beneficiary Warrington Foodbank has been able to support 18,000 people over the last 12 months thanks to donations from local initiatives from the likes of Cromwell JFC.

A third of donations over the past year were given to children in the area.

Daniel Taylor from Warrington Foodbank said: “Unfortunately, demand is increasing compared to previous years.

“We are seeing an increase in the range of circumstances too ,such as more people accessing us who are in some form of work, people who are fleeing domestic violence, homeowners who are struggling following interest rate rises and tenants struggling with rent increases.”
