A FORKLIFT truck driver died from a rare condition just days after having teeth taken out, an inquest has heard.
Grzegorz Jaworek, of Orford, died on May 21 this year after admitting himself to Warrington Hospital.
The 39-year-old had dental surgery earlier in the week to extract some teeth, Warrington Coroners’ Court heard at an inquest opening in June.
The full inquest took place recently which heard that on May 20, Mr Jaworek self-referred himself to Warrington Hospital’s emergency department following sudden onset shortness of breath at home.
He had reported to his partner that pain in his mouth started on May 15 following the extraction of lower-level teeth at his dental surgery.
The forklift truck driver returned to the surgery having made an urgent appointment by telephone on May 17 for an attendance on May 20.
The dentist adjusted his dentures which has been fitted to fill the extraction location and noted Mr Jaworek to be happy.
There was no sign of an ulcer on that visit, the inquest heard, and if there had been, it would resolve naturally.
Moreover, it was ruled that there was no inside mouth density that could have caused trauma to the Adam’s apple area of the throat.
Jacqueline Devonish, senior coroner for Cheshire noted that there was an acute outset of breathlessness and a sore throat, which was symptomatic of epiglottitis.
Epiglottitis is an illness all UK children are vaccinated against, and while everyone is susceptible to having it, not everyone will.
When the hospital staff became aware, Mr Jaworek, who was born in Poland, was treated with steroid nebulizers and antibiotics.
He appeared to improve but then suffered a sudden collapse, and despite treatment, he sadly passed away on May 21 at 1.07am.
The court heard that the medical cause of death given as pulmonary oedema and acute airway obstruction, secondary to epiglottitis.
Coroner Devonish gave a conclusion that, despite active treatment, Mr Jaworek died from a rare condition.
Ali Kennah, chief nurse at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Jaworek’s family and friends for their loss.”
