A RESPECTED animal shelter in Warrington has issued a plea to people thinking about buying fireworks this week.
This time of the year sees people setting off fireworks to mark Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, on and around November 5.
But ahead of the date tomorrow, Tuesday, Warrington Animal Welfare is urging people to commemorate differently, like visiting an organised light show or buying silent fireworks.
This is due to staff seeing the ‘terrifying’ impact loud firework bangs have on pets.
The shelter said: “Fireworks season can be exciting for us, but it is often terrifying for our pets and local wildlife.
“The loud noises and bright flashes can lead to stress, anxiety and even health issues for animals who do not understand what is happening.
“At Warrington Animal Welfare, we see the impact first hand. Each year, more pets go missing or require medical care due to firework-related stress.
“As much as we respect traditions, some celebrations could be updated to minimise harm to animals.
“This season, consider alternatives like silent fireworks, light shows or other low-noise festivities.
“Let’s celebrate in ways that make everyone, including our four-legged friends, feel safe and at peace.”
