Staff out on strike at Rubery Owen
THIS week we are going back in our archives to share this picture of strike action by staff at Rubery Owen.
The picture was taken by a Warrington Guardian photographer in the mid-1970s when around 500 workers walked out over a dispute regarding pay.
One worker said: “It was a freezing cold day.
“From what I can remember the strike went on for days – it may even have been a week.”
The three entrances to the firm, which made road laying machines among other items were on Thornton Road, Victoria Road and Clevleys Road, all off Liverpool Road.
The Ruberys site stretched from the bottom of Victoria Road and the other two entrances to the railway line. This is now a large housing estate.
