WARRINGTON Borough Council’s leader says the authority will ‘see what we can do’ for people in the town following the Prime Minister’s announcement that the single bus fare cap will increase.
Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed the single bus fare cap in England will be raised to £3 in the upcoming Budget.
It is an increase on the current limit of £2, which was due to expire at the end of 2024.
The new £3 cap will run until the end of 2025 – and will cover most bus journeys in England.
The £3 cap on bus fares was highlighted at the full council meeting in Warrington on Monday.
Council leader Cllr Hans Mundry, Labour, was asked if the council has heard any further information ‘over and above that’ in relation to people under 21 years of age using the bus service.
In relation to the cap that has been in place in Warrington, Cllr Mundry said Warrington has ‘put extra’ on the national fare offer for those under 21, which relates to the council being able to deliver £1 fares for young people through the bus service improvement funding.
He said the council will have to ‘look at the Budget situation’ and ‘review where we stand with that, and see what we can do for the people of Warrington’.
