A COMMUNITY grocery store that has helped a resident stop borrowing money to buy food has applied to retain its use.

The portacabin and storage unit, which is located at Bethel Free Church, has been supporting the community since 2022.

Used as a community grocery, the portacabin off on Cotswold Road in Orford aims to help alleviate food poverty in Warrington, providing families with access to affordable food.

Now, a planning application has been submitted to Warrington Borough Council to retain the portacabins use.

In an impact report submitted with the application, the purpose of the cabin was outlined, as well as the other ‘essential support services’ it provides.

“With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to impact lives, millions of families are struggling to put food on the table and demand for the for the services and support of the community grocery continues to grow significantly,” it read.

“Since the Warrington Community Grocery opened in 2022, it has become a key support organisation for the community it serves.

“On its own, Warrington Community Grocery has saved 103 tonnes of food waste through its redistribution model.

“As part of the grocery model, the partner church, Life Church Warrington, is also running a weekly tots group, have opened up a community café and run regular cooking course, not just for members but for the community.”

A testimonial included in the statement shared that one Warrington Community Grocery member no longer has to borrow money to buy food.

“As I shopped in Warrington Community Grocery, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders,” they said.

“I know I could go to the Community Grocery and get the food I need for a week, and it’s really affordable.

“I no longer have to borrow money from my mum to put food on the table.”

Warrington Borough Council will now deliberate the application and decide whether to approve the retention of the portacabin and storage unit.
