A RESIDENT has shared their concern after noticing an oil spillage in a park.
Daniel Middlehurst was walking through Sankey Valley Park on Friday when they noticed what appeared to be oil in Sankey Brook at around 5.15pm.
This led to him being concerned for wildlife in the brook and park.
“I was walking through Sankey Valley Park and was shocked and concerned to see oil covering much of the surface of the brook, flowing southwards downstream from the north,” he said.
“I was left very concerned about the consequences for birdlife, fish, flora and fauna.
“The photos taken on a bridge crossing Sankey Brook in Sankey Valley Park shows the oil pollution in the brook.
“I’m not sure what has caused this and whether it is related to recent heavy rainfall.”
A number of flood warnings were issued in the week prior to the find following heavy and persistent periods of rainfall.
When contacted by the Warrington Guardian, the Environment Agency stated that the incident had not been reported directly to itself, and therefore it was not made aware so it could investigate.
It was also suggested that the oil could have naturally washed through the watercourse by now, making it difficult to confirm a source.
It was suggested that it could have run into the watercourse from the road after the heavy rain.
Residents who come across incidents such as this are encouraged to report them directly to the Environment Agency.
A spokesman said: “We encourage members of the public who see any potential pollution incidents to contact our hotline on 0800 80 70 60.”
