Ergo coffee shop wanting to 'make a difference' in Golborne

Working in hospitality throughout her career, Emma Teale said that owning a family business was always a dream for her and husband Derek, although the Tyldesley couple didn't have a clear business project until recent years.

Looking at how businesses such as Mayhap coffee shop have helped to improve footfall and attitudes in Tyldesley, Emma and Derek wanted to follow in the same vein and create a welcoming coffee shop that acts as a community hub and supports other local businesses.

With personal circumstances changing earlier this year, Emma said that the "time felt right" and the family launched Ergo Coffee Shop along Heath Street in Golborne last month.

Inside the Heath Street coffee shop (Image: Emma Teale) With a three month refurbishment taking place before Ergo opened its doors, Emma said she is relieved with the response that the business is having in Golborne.

Emma, whose son also works at the coffee shop, said: "I definitely wanted Ergo to have a lovely, homely feel, so we had a lot of family and friends helping us out until we got it just right.

"It was quite exhausting but I'm so happy that people seem to be appreciating it! The shop has been really busy and we have had so many lovely comments, which is really nice to hear."

The 'incredibly popular' cake stand at Ergo (Image: Emma Teale) With a varied menu including speciality coffees, cakes, sandwiches, and salads, Emma said that it is "really important" that Ergo uses local produce and supports local businesses, to help the coffee shop feel a part of the community.

This approach seems to be paying dividends so far, and Emma hopes that Ergo and Golborne can thrive in years to come.

"There a few really great independents already in Golborne and I know that there are more to come, so with this and the new station potentially coming in the next few years, I'm hoping that it's going to be the new place to be.

"I didn't open a coffee shop to be a millionaire, I did it to make a difference, to support local businesses, and bring people together."
