A TEENAGER from Great Sankey is preparing to host a fundraising ‘extravaganza’ this weekend to help fund a trip to Kenya.
Jamie Leicester is a 15-year-old student at Great Sankey High School that is working hard to raise the money needed to go on an expedition to Kenya.
The trip, which is organised by Camps International, will take place next year, during which students will help deworm animals and build houses.
Jamie first heard about the trip at school and wanted to take part, but to do so he must pay £5,000 to cover flights, vaccinations and food.
“I thought it would be something good to do in the summer, and that it would be good to help people,” he said.
“It will be good to know that I’m actually helping people that are not as fortunate as people here.”
As part of his fundraising attempts, Jamie has attended car boot sales and even climbed Snowdon with his friends while dressed as animals.
So far, Jamie has raised more than £1,400, but he has more work ahead of him to reach his goal.
“It feels good [to have people donate] because it means they’ve helped me towards helping other people, which is nice,” he said.
“I am so impressed that he has done so well raising the money, it means he can concentrate on his GCSE’s instead of worrying about raising money,” said Jamie’s mum, Alison.
His next fundraising event will take place this weekend, on Saturday October 26, when he will help host a ‘60s and 70s extravaganza’.
Penketh Conservative Club, on Meeting Lane, will be filled with live music, bingo and even a raffle to help Jamie reach his goal.
Tickets to attend will cost £10 per adult, or £25 for a family and can be bought on the door.
The event will start at 7.30pm, and hotdogs and veggie dogs will be available.
“We are so proud of our children for fundraising and wanting to make an impact in Kenya,” said Alison.
“The dedication and commitment they have shown, even when they didn’t want to get up at 4.30am to do car boot sales, has been amazing to see.
“Please come and support them and have a fantastic night with live music, bingo, fabulous raffle prizes and more.”
