POLICE have been called to attend a reported traveller encampment in Warrington.

Four caravans and associated towing vehicles have pitched up unannounced on land on Fearnhead Lane.

This is at the eastern end of the street at the closed University of Chester campus.

The group arrived today, Wednesday, according to an unauthorised encampment log for Cheshire and Warrington.

The log, operated by the Cheshire and Warrington Traveller Team at Cheshire West and Chester Council, states that ownership of the land is to be determined.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed that an officer will attend with a member of the traveller liaison team to conduct a check.

The university closed the site in 2021 after the decision was taken to relocate facilities to a newer site in Warrington town centre.

David Wilson Homes acquired the land and plans to build approximately 400 new homes.

The encampment comes amid uncertainty over the delivery of a new traveller transit site in the town, with Warrington Borough Council seeking to create such a site at the closed Kenyon Lane Nurseries.
