A FIREFIGHTER from Warrington is set to climb 798 steps of a Manchester skyscraper for charity.

Mark Bottomley, a member of Green Watch Bolton Central, will take on the fundraising challenge for The Christie Charity.

The task involves climbing the 171-metre-high staircase of the Beetham Tower.

The crew, trained for high-rise fires, considers this both a unique challenge and a chance to support a good cause.

Bolton firefighter Ryan Bailey, with 16 years of service, will lead the fundraiser, joined by Mr Bottomley, Nick Rayner from Bolton, and Craig Travis from Middleton.

Mr Bailey said: "It seemed something a little out of the ordinary but also something we could do as a team, plus where else in Manchester can you do an event like this and be sheltered from the rain?

"We train for high-rise fires etc but don't get the opportunity to climb quite as many stairs.

"But, of course, it's all for a great cause which is the main thing."

Kevin Harmer, mass participation officer at The Christie Charity, said: "We’re thrilled to see such strong support from the Bolton fire crew.

"Their dedication to fundraising for The Christie Charity is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to cheer them on as they take on this incredible challenge."
