THERE was misery on the roads for the second day in succession today, Friday.

The swing bridges over the Manchester Ship Canal opened at rush on Friday morning bringing traffic in south Warrington to a halt.

Huge delays were seen on London Road, Chester Road, Wilderspool Causeway and Knutsford Road from 8am.

It follows a crossing at the same time on Thursday.

There has been a huge rise in the number of peak time openings of the bridge this year.

Peak time openings in the past five years of the Peel-operated bridges have averaged between 10 and 13 per cent of the total.

However the number has rocketed this year.

From January to March 2024 it stood at 25.71 per cent and between April and June it was 20.59 per cent.

So for the first three months, one in four openings of the bridges by Peel was at rush hour, with a resultant paralysis of the road network in Warrington.
